Recent research has shown that one of the keys to saving the coral reefs is to first save the mangroves - halophytic (salt-tolerant) trees and woody shrubs that grow in the upper part of the intertidal zone on shores not exposed to strong wave action or tidal scour. They form extensive communities bordering deltas, estuaries, inlets, tidal lagoons, and sheltered embayments, and are occasionally found behind beaches on coral islands
