After landing on fortless Staten Island on July 2, Gen. Howe, using the same strategy he had unsuccessfully employed at Bunker Hill (1775), routed the Americans out of their Long Island earthworks, forcing them to retreat to Manhattan by late August and then to Westchester County on November 16, as the last American position on the island, Fort Washington, fell.
