US Virgin Islands: an island named Santa Cruz ‘Holy Cross’ by Christopher Columbus† when he visited it in 1493. The French West India Company bought the island in 1665 from the Knights of Malta. It became a French colony in 1674 when it was given the present French form of its name. In 1733 the King of Denmark bought the island and Danish possession was retained until 1917 when it was sold to the USA.
