Fast-forward to 2009; the city of Pittsburgh was the top-ranked U.S. city in the Economist magazine’s annual poll of the world’s most livable cities.30 The waterfront is being restored, re-natured, and preserved, thanks in large part to the high-energy efforts of Friends of the Waterfront and an ambitious blueprint called the ‘Riverfront Development Plan.”31 In short, Pittsburgh went from an idyllic setting to the grime capital of America and then to a place that values its rivers, its waterfront, and its (p.238) natural setting. The city’s plan to revitalize the Golden Triangle was aptly named “Renaissance.”
