Cleveland, Benjamin

(1738–1806) frontiersman and Revolutionary War militia officer, born in Prince William County, Virginia. As a militia captain in North Carolina, he campaigned ruthlessly against Loyalists and the Cherokee. Later, as colonel of the Wilkes County militia, he led a column of about 900 “overmountain men” in an utter defeat of Maj. Patrick Ferguson's force of about 125 British regulars and 1,000 Tories at Kings Mountain (1780).
