Hugh Rodman

His early sea duty included cruising on the gunboat Yantic to Nova Scotia and in the Caribbean (1880-1882), on the sloop Wachusett over wide areas of the Pacific (1882-1883), and on the sloop Hartford (famous as Admiral David Farragut's flagship during the Civil War) along the west coast of the Americas and westward to Hawaii (1883-1884). After a year at the Hydrographic Office (1885-1886), he cruised to the Far East on the wooden steamer Essex and served on the gunboats Monocacy and Palos in the Far East.
