Lincoln, Abraham

(1809–1865), sixteenth president of the United States

Lincoln was born in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky. A paternal ancestor had arrived in Massachusetts from England in 1637. Abraham's father, Thomas, a respected farmer though semiliterate, shared the restlessness of the frontier, and in 1816 the family moved to Indiana.
