Kings Mountain, Battle of
(October 7, 1780) site in northwestern South Carolina where a coalition of frontiersmen directed by William Campbell of Virginia defeated English Maj. Patrick Ferguson's loyalist forces. It marked the turning point in revolutionary military fortunes by convincing loyalists to remove themselves from the conflict and setting the stage for ultimate British surrender at Yorktown (1781).
