Kennesaw Mountain

site of a confrontation between Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and Union Gen. William T. Sherman during the Civil War. The battle occurred at Kennesaw Mountain, Cobb County, Georgia, 20 miles (32 kilometers) from Atlanta, on June 27, 1864. Johnston and his 18,000 troops set up fortifications near the mountain to defend against the attack of Sherman and his 16,000 troops. Union troops withdrew after suffering casualties of approximately 2,500, the greatest Union loss during the Georgia Campaign.
