Juan Bautista de Anza
In addition to his active life as a military commander, explorer, Indian agent, and governor, Anza was one of a very few Spaniards native to the frontier to achieve fame. Energetic, ambitious, and proud of having risen from the ranks, he was known to have been sensitive and easily offended, probably due to his lower social status relative to his Spanish-born superiors.
