American National Biography
Henry Chandler Cowles
When John Merle Coulter was appointed professor of botany, Cowles became a member of the first group of graduate students in that department, and was appointed a graduate assistant in 1897. His classic dissertation, "The Ecological Relations of the Vegetation on the Sand Dunes of Lake Michigan," was the first major study of dunes in America and the first to show the relationships between vegetation and physiography. Cowles completed his studies, earning a Ph.D., in 1898.
