Cowboys

Cattle hands, especially in the West of the United States. They began to feature regularly in dime novels during the 1880s, one of the earliest such books to include the word ‘Cowboy’ in its title being Lone Star, the Cowboy Captain (1882) by Prentiss Ingraham, a hack-writer who specialized in stories about Buffalo Bill. Formerly, during the period of the Revolutionary War in America, the word ‘cowboy’ had been used for members of pro-British guerrilla bands.
