Mason nevertheless became well known to Virginia's political leaders. He was remarkably well informed on matters of law and commerce and particularly on western affairs. In 1752 he became treasurer of the Ohio Company, one of the largest of the land companies attempting to gain title to large tracts of western lands with the hope of selling small plots to settlers and making large profits in the process.
