Fort Necessity

an entrenched camp built by George Washington in July 1754, near what is now Uniontown, Pennsylvania. A large French force, attacking in reprisal for a the defeat of a French patrol near Great Meadows, forced Washington to surrender on July 4. Washington was able to return to Virginia with all of his remaining men and supplies
