Fort Monroe

a fort built in 1819 on the Chesapeake Bay, near Hampton, Virginia. From 1861 to 1865, during the Civil War, Fort Monroe was the only Union outpost in the Confederacy. In 1861, Maj. Benjamin Butler used Fort Monroe as a place of refuge for escaping slaves.
